Opua Forest Paihia Lookout Track

Opua Forest Look Out Paihia

Paihia is a coastal settlement in the beautiful Bay Of Islands in New Zealand's Northland region, the area thrives on tourism and is popular year round for boating cruises out to the popular hole in the rock at Cape Brett.

The Opua Forest Paihia Lookout Track is a great short walk located close to the town centre, Starting at the end of School Road Paihia the walk is through the Horotutu Scenic Reserve.

From the start of the track the graident is gentle then you start accending up the hillside winding around fantastic native trees like Kauri, the up hill walk takes around 30 minutes on well graded trails untill you reach a junction.

This junction joins up with the Oromahoe Traverse which is on the left side the track on the right hand side takes you out to a fantastic lookout around another 10 minutes walk, the views out across the open ocean and Paihia are stunning.

The Oromahoe Traverse runs from the junction with the lookout track and follows a ridge line through to Oromahoe Road on the other side of the Opua Forest, this walk will take around 2.5 hrs one way.

The Oromahoe Track is not well maintained like the Paihia Lookout Track which is gravel based, the traverse walk will be slippery and muddy in adverse conditions and also boasts many tree roots crossing the track as well.

The Opua Forest Paihia Lookout walk is rated as easy and will take around 40 minutes to the lookout, the traverse walk to Oromahoe Road is moderate in good conditions and takes around 2.5 hrs one way, the native bush and views are fantastic and well worth the effort.
