Whangaruru is a remote settlement located in New Zealand's Northland region, the area is part of a peninsula that forms the Whangaruru Harbour, and this whole area is a fantastic playground for outdoor enthusiasts with fishing, boating and fantastic coastal walks available year round.
Located around 1.5 hrs drive north of Whangarei on tight winding roads the trip out there is a great adventure, with Helena Bay and Oakura Bay on the same route there are endless places to explore along this fantastic stretch of coastline.
The loop walks are accessed at the very end of Whangaruru North Road, there is a desinated carpark here just before entering the Puriri Bay Camping grounds, there are several options available depending on your level of fitness and available time for completing the walks.
There are three loop walks to choose from the Southern loop, the Northern loop or a combination of both the loop walks that form one large loop around Whangaruru North head, the Southern Loop takes around 1.5 hrs, the Northern loop around 1 hour and both combined around 2.5 hrs.
The Northern loop walk entrance is back down the Whangaruru North road around two minutes from the carpark this section follows the valley floor before a steep ascent up to the ridge line, there is a fantastic view of Bland Bay and the out lying islands just before the summit.
The southern Loop is accessed by following the camp ground entrance road and you will see the sign at the top of the hill before the camp ground or carry on through the campground this will take you through to the Whangaruru North Head tracks which loop back to a junction of the Northern and the Southern Loops where here you can return to the carpark or carry on to the Northern loop and back down the ridge line to the carpark.
The loop walks are suitable for all the family to enjoy there are some steep climbs and decents on parts of the walk, the track is well maintained and the stunning coastal scenery makes up for the walking involved.
To walk the entire loop track allow most of the day as there are places to explore along the way, accomodation is available through the Puriri Bay campsite which is motorhomes or camping only.
