Piroa Falls Waipu Gorge Northland

Piroa Falls Waipu Gorge

This hidden gem is located in the Waipu Gorge Northland just south of Whangarei and is accessed by driving along the Waipu Gorge road which is right at the base of the Brynderwyns on the Whangarei side of the ranges the access road is gravel for around 8kms to the Piroa Falls carpark.

The drive to the falls is through stunning native bush and forest and at a gentle driving pace this is a great drive through the gorge, the Piroa Falls are a great side trip when returing to Auckland from Northland or visiting the Whangarei Northland region as it is not that far from the main highway.

From the falls carpark it is an easy decent down a well marked and maintained gravel walking track to the valley floor below, taking extra care along the side of the stream as the rocks can be slipery in the rain, then crossing a small concrete bridge over the stream there is a picnic table located by the stream and under the shealter of native trees an ideal place for lunch.

The piroa Falls walk only takes around ten minutes of easy walking to the base of the falls, the falls are a Horsetail water fall characterized by the fan type spray that the falls produce from contacting the bedrock for most of the drop down to the base of the stream below, the falls are around twenty meters in hieght.
